What is hit frequency in slots? Four studio sheets compared

Hit frequency is the share of spins that pay anything. Four Nolimit City game pages show why it is a separate number from RTP and bonus odds.

By Staff, Spin & Tell

Hit frequency in slots is the share of spins that return any win, whatever its size. A game printing 25% pays something on roughly one spin in four. It is a separate statistic from return to player (RTP): two games can share an RTP and sit far apart on hit frequency. The in-game paytable is the copy of record.

This is an evergreen explainer, not a news item. This desk read Nolimit City’s game pages for Mental, San Quentin, Tombstone R.I.P and Fire In The Hole xBomb on 23 October 2026, and every figure below is as printed there.

What four Nolimit City sheets print

GameRTPHit frequencyFree spinsMax win probability
Mental96.08%34.19%1 in 2161 in 18m
San Quentin96.03%34.25%1 in 230N/A
Fire In The Hole xBomb96.06%25.98%1 in 2001 in 2.4m
Tombstone R.I.P96.08%09.08%1 in 1941 in 130m

Tombstone R.I.P’s figure appears on the page as 09.08%, which is 9.08%. San Quentin’s max-win probability is printed N/A, and this piece infers none.

Hit frequency vs RTP

Mental and Tombstone R.I.P print an identical 96.08% RTP, yet Mental pays on about one spin in three and Tombstone R.I.P on about one in eleven. The return is the same; its distribution is not. At the same RTP, a low hit frequency holds the money back for rarer results.

The sheets also show that hit frequency, free-spins odds and max-win probability are three published statistics, not one.

How a rule moves the figure

Tombstone R.I.P’s page describes xRIP: any spin whose total win is less than the base stake pays nothing. The page, as read here, does not explain its hit frequency, but the rule’s direction is clear: wins below stake are removed, so fewer spins can count as paying. This site’s guide to finding RTP explains why the in-game copy governs, and its explainer on how online slots work covers the random number generator behind each spin.

Hit frequency questions

How do I calculate the hit frequency of a slot machine?

By definition, divide the number of spins that returned any win by the total number of spins. A published figure describes the game’s design over a very long run of spins, so a short session will not reliably reproduce it; the published number is the one to read.

What is the difference between hit frequency and RTP?

RTP is the share of total stakes a game is designed to pay back over a very long run. Hit frequency is how often a spin pays anything at all. Mental and Tombstone R.I.P both print 96.08% RTP on Nolimit City’s pages, yet one prints 34.19% hit frequency and the other 09.08%.

What is a good hit frequency on a slot?

There is no good or bad figure, only a design choice. A high hit frequency spreads the return across many small wins; a low one concentrates it in rarer, larger results. Neither changes the RTP, and neither predicts how a given session will go.

This describes what a published figure measures, not how to play; nothing here was played or recommended. 18+. A frequent win is not a profitable one, and the paytable governs every session.
